The Secrets to Writing Good Website Content
We want to give the visitor a good UX (as it’s sometimes referred to) or user experience!
Writing good content for your website is the most important thing you can do. It’s the reason we have our own sites, to offer a platform to talk to others about what we know about best.
As a writer, you must engage and entertain the reader, and show them that you’re an authority on a particular subject. You know what you’re talking about and you hope they are learning a little from your copy.
We tend to like news sites as they are frequently updated with new and mostly interesting information. The stories are well written and captivate our attention. We often stay there longer than intended and may even get sidetracked into clicking on another news story. This is just what we, as web authors seek to achieve on our own sites. Holding onto traffic and reducing bounce rates (the percentage of visitors who arrive at the website and “bounce off” (leave the site) rather than continue viewing other pages within the same site).
Great Content is Simply Influential Words
You don’t need diplomas and degrees; enthusiasm and eloquence will do perfectly well. Tell a story in your OWN words, don’t plagiarize or cut and paste from other people’s articles, and make the visitor want more and perhaps they’ll stay a while.
Grammar and spelling come into the mix as well. Loads of typos or poor punctuation can make the article difficult to read or understand. It doesn’t take much to run your article through spell check or even a bespoke grammar cum spell checker. A really useful one is the brilliant Grammarly.com.
Having used Grammarly for a few years now, I always feel happy knowing that my content is unique and free from those nasty little spelling distractions. This online software is used extensively by many universities and learning institutions to check for both grammar and plagiarism.
Always Be Unique and Write from the Heart
Don’t be afraid of writing from the heart in your own way, just gather your thoughts, do your research and write as if you were speaking it. This way, you’ll find it flows better on the page and won’t sound stilted or disjointed.
I can usually tell if copy has been ‘borrowed’ from other sources, as one paragraph tends not to lead into another, or occasionally it doesn’t even make sense.
What you should do:
- Develop your own style
- Don’t write rubbish
- Don’t plagiarize
- Use good spelling and grammar
- Don’t be afraid to add humor into your dialog
- Make the article or blog compelling reading to carry the reader along
- Most importantly, make the content relevant.
Read Your Copy Through For Fluency
Free flowing content should appear to be like talking to someone face-to-face When finished ALWAYS re-read through the article, it’s surprising how many little mistakes and typos can get through.
Pay attention to the overall message and help the visitor find what they have come for – and redirect them to somewhere that could be just as useful – that is what writing good website content is all about!
